What was the most claimed treatment from nib in October?

New Zealand insurance provider nib has released their top five health insurance claims from October this year. Usually these top claims are for a variety of reasons, but in October, there was one treatment that took out the majority. Can you guess what it was?

If you guessed Cardiac Surgery, you’d be correct. In October, nib paid out almost $300,000 in claims for Cardiac Surgery treatments – and all for men.

This may not be surprising given that in New Zealand, men develop heart disease 10 years earlier than women on average. They’re also more likely to have a heart attack than women, and subsequently require Cardiac Surgery.

The males who claimed for treatment for heart-related issues had a median age of 67, with the average cost of treatment coming in at around $73,000. These numbers highlight the significance of having health insurance when you need it most.

As you age, your chances of being eligible for certain health cover can be significantly reduced. Although you might not need health insurance now while you’re younger, you’ll likely need it when you reach the later decades of your life.

It can be extremely difficult to find $70,000 to fund Cardiac Surgery in your 70s, so it’s important to think ahead and cover your future self now, while you still can.

Talk to us about getting health insurance that will stay with you as you get older, ensuring your future self is covered when you need it most.
