What you need to know about nib’s pre-existing condition cover
For many New Zealanders, health insurance gives them the security of being covered against unexpected surprises that could impact their health and wellbeing. But for others, there may be a fear that they can’t get insurance cover for the health conditions they’re already dealing with, including anything from a strange-looking mole to endometriosis.
Given that nib currently has a limited time offer on health insurance for pre-existing conditions, let’s look at how their Easy Health, Ultimate Health and Ultimate Health Max policies can cover many of your pre-existing conditions after an applicable waiting period.
What is a pre-existing condition?
In its simplest form, a pre-existing condition is something that you are aware of prior to the start date of your policy. It can be a diagnosed condition, an injury, or symptoms that have been diagnosed, whether you’ve had investigations or consultations relating to the condition or not.
Common pre-existing conditions include cancer, diabetes, depression, sleep apnoea and asthma.

What you need to know about Easy Health
nib Easy Health private health insurance provides cover for major treatments and procedures in private hospitals, including many of the costs associated with these treatments.
Easy Health also covers some pre-existing conditions after a period of three years, which can be important if you’ve had health issues in the past and would like to have eligible conditions covered in the future. If you know what pre-existing conditions you are concerned about, we can provide guidance around what might be covered under nib’s plans.
It’s important to note that there are some pre-existing conditions and treatments that are never covered under the Easy Health policy. You can get in touch with our team to find out more about these.
Easy Health Case Study
Prior to taking out Easy Health cover with nib, 52 year old Dave had a shoulder injury that required surgical and rotator cuff repair.
Five years after taking out Easy Health, the joint had deteriorated, leading to pain, loss of movement, and function in the joint. This made Dave’s everyday life difficult, and as the shoulder worsened, it was recommended that Dave have a shoulder replacement.
As Dave had passed the 3-year waiting period for pre-existing condition cover, he was able to proceed with his surgery. If Dave had taken out a standard underwritten policy, he may have been permanently excluded from coverage.
Helping to unlock better health outcomes with nib’s exclusive offer
Everyone deserves access to good health cover, and pre-existing conditions don’t need to get in the way of this. That’s why nib has an exclusive offer to make their Ultimate Health plans a little bit more ultimate.
Two of nib’s most comprehensive and flexible private health insurance policies—Ultimate Health Max and Ultimate Health—already offer their very best cover and protection for a wide range of essential health treatments and the costs that go with them. However, this normally excludes cover for pre-existing conditions.
Now, for a limited time, you can also get many pre-existing conditions covered after three years on these plans. This offer also applies to specific Ultimate Health and Ultimate Health Max Options to enhance cover: Specialist Option, GP Option, Dental, Optical, and Therapeutic Option and Proactive Health Option*.
