Heading overseas? Here’s why travel insurance is essential

Whether you’re soaking up the sights and sun of the Mediterranean or you’re hitting the ski slopes of Japan, travelling abroad is a great way to learn more about the world and try something new. But before you embark on the adventure of a lifetime, it’s essential that you’re prepared—and we don’t just mean packing the right gear.

Sorting travel insurance for your overseas holiday is absolutely essential when it comes to keeping you and your travel buddies safe. Even if you’re simply lying on a golden beach in the Cook Islands, anything could happen, and if it does, you want to know you’re covered.

Don’t believe us? Check out some real-life travel insurance claims stories from Cover-More to understand why travel insurance is so necessary when heading away.

Fires in Maui

Where: United States of America

Total claim cost: $3,133

A couple of travellers were unfortunately caught up in the Maui fires in Hawaii. They were stuck in their accommodation with no internet, power, running water, or reception and were unable to contact the outside world. Eventually, the state of Hawaii evacuated them via school buses to Oahu. However, due to the sudden hotel demand, accommodation costs were unreasonably high. The travellers were able to make it back home safely and made a claim for their extra accommodation costs under the Additional Expenses section of their policy.

Sprained ankle while hiking

Where: Nepal

Total claim cost: $8,935

14 days into a 19-day hike in Nepal, a traveller rolled their ankle and badly sprained it. Fellow hikers had to walk to the nearest village to find a horse, which the traveller then rode back to the village. Cover-More’s 24/7 emergency assistance team arranged an emergency evacuation to Kathmandu, where the traveller received the necessary medical treatment.

They then claimed under Medical and Emergency Dental Expenses and Additional Expenses in their travel insurance policy.

Missing medication

Where: United States of America

Total claim cost: $350

A traveller was staying in a hotel in Los Angeles. After dinner one night, they returned to their hotel and found that their box of anti-anxiety medication had gone missing. Unable to find it, they then had to purchase another 30 days' worth of medication. Luckily, with their travel insurance policy, they were able to make a claim for this under the Luggage and Travel Documents section.

From sprained ankles on intrepid journeys to losing essential medicine at a hotel, anything can happen when you travel. To give you peace of mind that no matter what goes wrong, make sure that you arrange for comprehensive travel insurance the next time you head overseas.
